Legionella is nothing but a pathogenic group of bacteria. This comes in rod -shape and gram-negative. This is the main reason behind the legionellosis. This is the group of major illnesses consisting primarily of Legionnaire's Disease. This is a dangerous form of pneumonia and other minor diseases such as Lochgoilhead fever and Pontiac fever. This is a mild influenza such as illness, whereas Lochgoilhead fever is a mild form of lung infection.

Five Things About Legionella

1. If you check the water, you can easily find the bacterium Legionella. And these can be available at the natural sources of water such as ponds and rivers.

2. But, these are the natural sources and most of the people don't come into the engagement with this bacteria from such places, actually the bacteria grows in the man-made water systems.

3. You can find these types of bacteria in swimming pools, cooling towers, ice-making machines, hot springs, whirlpool spas, industrial coolants, soil, washer fluids, fountains, dental equipment, showers, cooling cabinets, condensers, and domestic water systems.

4. Such kind of bacteria can travel up to 6 kilometer in the air so they can easily move from one place to another.

5. Legionella is the main reason behind many illness related to water.

Who is at Risk?

As per the research Legionella is less effective on the health of young people. But at the same time, it can harm a lot to the health of people with weak immune systems and the old people.

The following types of people are at high risk because of Legionella:-

People over 45 years oldHeavy drinkers and smokersPeople with low immunityDiabetic individuals or individuals suffering from lung or heart diseasePeople suffering from kidney or respiratory issues

The Main Three Types of Legionella Analysis

Culture-based Method: This is the most famous type of Legionella analysis method and it is used worldwide. This can be use on different types of media whether it's portable water centrifuged or filtered for concentration. The non-portable water is pretreated with heat or an acid to eliminate non-Legionella bacterial .

Direct Fluorescence Antibody: With the help of fluorescent dye, the anti-bodies are directed on the Legionella bacterium in this method. You can't use this method on environmental samples.

Polymerase Chain Reaction: With the help of the Legionella cells, you can determine both variable as well as non- variable DNA and RNA. This is nothing but the qualitative test.
